Our trek start early during the morning in Cusco city where we catch our tourist bus or van with some stops on the way to the trail head, first stop Limatambo village to enjoy the Inca remains of Tarawasi (Archeological site ) then we continue to Mollepata village finally through the Soraypampa valley we arrive to the trail head. Day five we catch the early train to Machupicchu Inca City. Afternoon back to Cusco.
In the sixteenth century the Cordillera Vilcabamba area was the refuge of the last Incas, from there they aimed to re/conquer their lands from the Spanish Crown. Two of the most important ruins in Peru, Machu Picchu and Choquequirao, were settled in the region. The transition between the tropical forest and the snow mountains occurs in a few kilometers. The area is great for climbing, hiking and visiting archaeological sites. The highest mountains are Salkantay 6,271m.a.s.l. / 20,568ft. Pumasillo 5,991m.a.s.l./ 19,650ft. Lasunayoc 5,960m.a.s.l./ 19,548ft. Soray 5,928m.a.s.l./ 19,443ft. Padreyoc 5,771m.a.s.l. / 18,928ft. Panta 5,605m.a.s.l. / 18,384ft. Huayanay 5,464m.a.s.l. / 17,921ft. We leave the Cusco city at 6:00 a.m. in a private bus or Van, and drive to Mollepata town. For about 5 hours, we will have some stops along the way like in the town of Limatambo 2,100 m.a.s l. / 6,880 ft. Here we will visit the archaeological site of Tarawasi, an important point of access to the city of Cusco during the Inca time, then we leave Limatambo and drive up on the right shore of the Apurimac river, to Mollepata town 2,800 m.a.s.l. / 9,185 ft. then we will continue drive up through the Cruzpata town 3,100 m.a.s.l. /10,170 ft. then will go in to the Soraypampa valley the final driving portion with a spectacular views along the trail with many levels of variations and along the dusty road we will see little groups of houses, flora, small wild birds and spectacular view of the Humantay snow peak mountain 5,902 m.a.s.l. / 19,358 ft. finally we will get Soraypamapa 3,900 m.a.s.l. / 12,800 ft. the trail head of our hike, here we will meet our Mountain staff and horses to carry our luggage, here also we will have our first lunch, after the lunch break we will start our afternoon hike with a gradual up hill right to our first camp site of Icchupata
After breakfast will leave the campsite at around 7:00 a.m. to start the hike steep climb towards the Incachiriasca pass 4,950 m.a.s.l. / 16,236 ft. the highest point of the all trek, and from which one we will have impressive views of the Salkantay mountain 6,285 m.a.s.l. / 20,614 ft. on the pass we break or photo time this is a perfect place for a impressive views of the vilcabamba mountain range. After that we will descend towards our lunch place after the pass, observing Salkantay valley and the beginning of Sisaypampa valley (it is possible that we can see condors in this area). After that pass our path continues down the up to Cruz Qasa, where we camp at 4,490m.a.s.l. / 14,727 ft.
After Breakfast, our trek takes us around the high land mountains trek is up and down over 4,000m.a.s.l./13,120ft. today the highest pass Cruz Qasa pass at 4,715m.a.s.l. / 15,465ft. with exceptional views of the Ocobamba Mountain 5,126m.a.s.l. / 16,813ft. after the pass a long down hill the short up hill to our camp at Inca Raqay 4,600m.a.s.l. / 15,088 ft.
After the Breakfast, we star up hill to cross the final pass just 200 m / 656 ft above our camp the trail descends to Ancasqocha village several farmers along the big flat valley then the trail takes us to the narrow Chillca canyon long way down hill following the Ancasqocha river after the canyon we will see the most fertile area of the region - the Urubamba Valley the end of our trek the chillca village here we say good bye to our mountain staff then we catch a 30 minutes small van to Ollantaytambo town 2,800m.a.s.l. / 9,184ft. Here overnight in a comfortable lodge.
Today we have the Breakfast at the lodge then we take a short walk to the train station for the ride to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu, the so-called "Lost City of the Incas", remains intact because it was never discovered by the invading Spanish. Constructed on a high, forested mountain overlooking the Urubamba River, Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu were lost in time and dense foliage until they were discovered in July 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. Once to get Machu Picchu town we catch the 20 minutes bus ride, the guide will carefully explain the history of this unique place. Late afternoon bus and train back to Cusco.
