The spectacular scenery of the URUBAMBA MOUNTAIN RANGE complicated geological topography with deep valleys where the high mountain Andean people makes trails hundreds year ago with ascends and descends or just well know up hill and down hill those trails connect several and remote and rarely visited region offer to the adventure people a real lives of the Andean farmers, dressed in their traditional colored customs specially the ponchos, we will see several thatched stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas, small villages of shepherds and weavers in the highland, enjoy this short hike in this part of the Peruvian Andes. A unique hike to get in touch with Andean people and learn about their traditions and life-style. Social help is appreciated.

DETAILED ITINERARY

DIA 1: CUSCO - LARES VALLEY.

We leave from Cusco city by Bus or Van early during the morning, it will be a long drive approximately 5 hours with several stops along the way, also the bus ride is with spectacular views, through part of the sacred valley, we'll arrive to Lares District and our campsite is near to the hot springs 3,150m.a.s.l. / 10,170ft. Here we just drop our equipment then we'll continue by bus to the one of the famous Quechua community called Choquecancha, where we can interact with locals specially with women whose are specialist making textiles (back strap looms). There will be a good chance to know about the local weavers, some thing amazing is to find in a middle of the community the remains of an impressive Inca construction, which one has a panoramic view of the all valley, after to explore the community way back to the campsite hiking, now we have a great option to jump to the hot spring pools.

DAY 2: LARES HOT SPRING - HUACAHUASI - MILLPOQOCHA.

We start our second day meeting our "arrieros" (horse drivers). This day morning our trail has a gradually ascend toward to Huacahuasi valley and the river the same name, farmers community, this area is a big valley with rich farming fields, during the afternoon up hill toward the high pass of HUACAHUASIQASA with 4,400m.a.s.l. / 14,500ft this area considered as a highland we can appreciate heard of llamas and alpacas around the hike, our campsite is still on the highland lake of MILLPO lake with 3,900m.a.s.l. / 12,790 ft. which lake has several rainbow trout and beautiful views. After the high pass is another beautiful big lake also with several trout and then start the high forest composed by native trees of Queuña (Polylepis sp).

DAY 3: MILLPOQOCHA- YANAHUARA - CUSCO.

Today our hike will be easy down hill right to the end of the trail towards the Yanahuara valley, along that runs the river which one start in Laguna Millpo, the water makes rich the area fertilized the farming field, all the way is through the native forest a good option to see still there some of our native vegetation. After lunch we will be transfer to Cusco City we arrive early during the afternoon.

  • Long pants and shorts.
  • Long sleeved shirts and T-shirts.
  • Warm clothes sweaters, jacket and fleece.
  • Rain gear.
  • Camera, films, batteries.
  • Flashlight and batteries.
  • Insect repellent and sun block.
  • Personal toilet items and first aid kit.
  • A pocketknife.
  • A water bottle and purified pills.
  • A change of underwear.
  • Hat or cap to protect from the sun, rain or cold.
  • A pack towel.
  • Snacks: Energy bars, chocolate, biscuits, dry fruits etc.
  • Cash USD and local currency (no option for ATM machines)
  • Swimsuit (optional hot springs visit)
  • Walking sticks with rubber covers (optional).

  • Pick up from hotels all the members, then transfer by Bus or Van to Lares Village (trailhead).
